Some ISPs(a ISP is a company that provides Internet

providers, sell Internet

What is the MAC Address?
The MAC address is a unique value associated with a network
adapter. MAC Addresses are
also referred to as a ‘hardware’
or ‘physical’
address, as well as a Host
ID. They uniquely identify
an adapter on a LAN.
MAC addresses are 12-digit hexadecimal numbers (48 bits in
length). You will usually
see MAC addresses written in
the following two formats:
0a1b3c4567d3
The first half of a MAC address contains the ID
number of the adapter
manufacturer. These IDs are
regulated by an Internet
standards body. The second
half of a MAC address
represents the serial number
assigned to the adapter by
the manufacturer. In the
example,
00A0C914C829,the
prefix,
00A0C9,
indicates the manufacturer
is Intel Corporation.

WOL (Wake On LAN)
This feature is very similar as WOM
(Zero Voltage Wake On Modem), but it goes
through local area network. To use Wake On
LAN function, you must have a network card
with chipset that supports this feature, and
connect a cable from LAN card to motherboard
WOL connector. The system identification
information (probably IP address) is stored
on network card and because there is a lot
of traffic on the Ethernet. Note that, at
least 600mA ATX standby current is required
to support the LAN card for this function. |
